10 Ways to Eat Healthily on a Budget
Eating healthily doesn’t have to break the bank! With a little planning and creativity, it’s possible to nourish your body while keeping your wallet happy. Whether you’re looking to make smarter choices at the supermarket or find affordable, nutritious recipes, I’ve got you covered. Here are 10 simple and practical ways to eat healthily on a budget without sacrificing flavour or nutrition.
1. Plan Ahead
Sit down as a family and plan the menu for the week. This helps you stay on track, avoid last-minute takeaways, and save on ingredients by making use of leftovers.
2. Replace Some Meat with Lentils
When preparing meals like bolognese and chilli, try swapping half the mince for red lentils. Not only are red lentils more affordable than beef; they’re also rich in plant-protein and fibre, which helps to support heart health, digestion, and maintain balanced blood sugar levels.
3. Batch Cook
Pick 2-3 recipes you can batch cook and portion out for the week. This not only saves time but helps you stay on track with your meals while reducing ingredient costs. Think breakfast bars, overnight oats, soups, stews, casseroles, chillis, tomato-based sauces, or bolognese.

4. Buy Frozen Veggies and Fruits
Frozen fruits and veggies can actually be more nutritious than fresh ones! They’re picked and frozen at the source, preserving more nutrients compared to fresh produce that’s often picked early and shipped long distances. Plus, they’re much more affordable. Frozen spinach, chopped onions, peppers, and peeled butternut squash are perfect for meal prepping and batch cooking.
5. Eat Seasonally
When buying fresh fruits and vegetables every week, opt for those that are in season. For example, asparagus is much more affordable in the spring when it’s in season, compared to autumn or winter when prices can double. Fresh strawberries and raspberries are also much cheaper in the summer when they are grown in the UK. Below is an image of the seasonal wheel from LEON Restaurant, showing you what to buy at different times of the year.
6. Buy in Bulk
Items like oats, rice, nuts, and seeds are often much cheaper when purchased in bulk. Shop around for the best deals—LIDL and Aldi are usually great options for affordable store cupboard staples. Opt for larger bags that will last longer and save you money in the long run.
7. Start Growing Your Own Veggies
Tomatoes, green beans, spinach, rocket, and herbs are all affordable and simple to grow, offering bountiful harvests that will last through the summer. Grab a grow bag, plant some seeds or starter plants, and you’re all set! Be sure to shield them from pests. If you find yourself with an abundance of tomatoes, try making a batch of tomato and garlic sauce to freeze for later!
8. Use an App to Track Supermarket Deals
Supermarkets often rotate their best deals, so it pays to stay in the loop. Download the Trolley.co.uk app on your phone or use it in your browser to compare prices and plan your shopping for the week ahead. This way, you can easily find the best discounts at different stores.
9. Put Your Slow Cooker to Work
A slow cooker is perfect for batch cooking and can help lower your energy bill! Running it for 6 hours costs far less than using the oven for an hour. Plus, it's a huge time-saver and convenient. It’s also great for beginners—just toss everything in, set it, and let it do the work for you.
10. Shop for Groceries Online
Shopping online reduces the temptation to add unnecessary items to your basket. If online shopping isn't an option, plan ahead, create a list, and stick to it. Be sure to link your rewards card to earn loyalty points, and sign up for notifications on any special offers.
